Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) chairman, Jusuf Kalla said the government in 2010 would need a total of 4.6 million bags of blood in its effort to provide health services, or sharply rose compared with two million of last year.
"The ideal amount of blood needs of a country is two percent of the population. If the Indonesian people totalled 230 million, the amount of needs is 4.6 million bags of blood per year," Kalla said here on Sunday.
In a bid to obtain the amount of 4.6 million bags of blood, Kalla said, PMI and the Indonesian Blood Donors Association (PDDI) which is supported by the Ministry of Health will work together to improve services to inspire and bring people to always conduct the blood donation activities.
Thus PMI would open around 125 outlets, of which 100 outlets would be opened in malls and the other 25 in campuses of universities across the country, he said.
Citing an example on the need of blood, Jusuf Kalla, the former vice president said that Jakarta needs a total of 1,000 bags of blood, so that the blood provided should reach 1,200 bags so as to prepare for urgent need.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Sri Endang Rahayu Sedianingsih MPH said, her office supported Kalla`s initiative to lure blood donors. (*)Editor: Jafar M Sidik
