Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian police are investigating the possible involvement of masterminds behind the violent anti-Bank Century bailout rally outside the parliament building here Tuesday.
"We are directing our investigation into that possibility," the Indonesian police headquarters` spokesman Inspector General Edward Aritonang said in response to Tuesday`s demonstration.
The clues of masterminds` possible involvement could be found in the protesters` way of breaking the parliament building`s main fence.
Aritonang said the protesters tied the fence with rope and then a car pulled it.
The demonstrators also intentionally pelted stones and wooden stuff at the police personnel, he said.
Twelve anti-Bank Century bailout protesters were arrested in Jakarta, East Kalimantan, and Central Java, Aritonang said.
In Jakarta, the police also found four molotov cocktails in a park near the Indonesian parliament building and seized a car used for breaking the police`s wire barricades.
A policeman got injured after a stone that the demonstrators pelted hit his forehead.
The anti-Bank Century bailout rally was staged on the day the House of Representatives (DPR) held its plenary session on the bank scandal.
Besides throwing stones, bottles, and wooden sticks at the anti-riot policemen, the demonstrators also attempted to bring down the parliamentary building`s fence.
In response to the demonstrators` violent acts, the police personnel used water cannon and tear gas to drive them out.
The demonstrators who demanded transparent and fair trials for those responsible for the Bank Century bailout scandal belonged to several non-governmental organizations.
Among the organizations were KIPP (Committee of Independent Election Monitors), FK Ampera, Indonesian Young Farmers, SPN (National Labour Union), KSBSI (Confederation of Indonesian Labor Unions), and FUIB (United Muslim Forum).
Vice President Boediono, a former Bank Indonesia (BI) governor, and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani were among those named by several party factions in the House`s Bank Century Inquiry Committee as responsible for the Bank Century scandal.(*)Editor: B Kunto Wibisono
