Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Antasari Azhar on Monday formally filed papers for a review of his 18-year jail sentence in the Nasruddin Zulkarnaen murder case.

One of Antasari`s lawyers, Juniver Girsang, who filed the official appeal at the South Jakarta District Court, said his client should have been acquitted completely "because there was nothing for which Antasari can be legally held accountable."

The South Jakarta Court in February sentenced Antasari to 18 years in jail for his alleged involvement in the murder of state enterprise PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran director Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.

Juniver said the charge that Antasari had once threatened Nasrudin in an short text message (SMS) had not been proven in the court trials.

Also, the court trials had failed to produce proof that Antasari had ordered Sigid Haryo Wibisono and Police Senior Commissioner Wiliardi, Wizar to eliminate Nasrudin, Juniver said.

"All the fundamental arguments in the charges were not supported by real proof, so that our client should have been declared innocent," he said.

Meanwhile, the Judicial Court (KY) also seems to doubt the correctness or legitimacy of the South Jakarta District Court`s verdict on Antasari.

KY Chairman M Busyro Moqoddas said last Sunday (Mar 1) the court was setting up a team to examine the correctness or legitimacy of the South Jakarta District Court`s decision to sentence Antasari to 18 years in jail.

The KY team would be led by the KY`s commissioner for supervision, Judge Zainal Arifin, he said.

The team would assess Antasari`s sentence from different viewpoints, including from the viewpoint of the judiciary code of ethics.

For the purpose, the KY had requested and duly received a copy of the official text of the South Jakarta District Court`s verdict on Antasari, Busyro said. (*)
