Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A selection committee will be set up to choose a candidate for chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to replace current chief Tumpak Hatorangan, Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said.
After an internal meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Monday the minister said he had proposed the setting up of the committee to select Tumpak`s replacement and the President had approved it.
"I just now proposed the immediate formation of a selection committee and the President agreed," he said.
Patrialis said the selection to find Tumpak`s replacement had to be immediately carried out without having to wait for the selection of four other KPK leaders whose term of office would expire in 2011.
He admitted there were those who viewed that KPK must be led by five leaders collectively and those who thought that the anti-graft body could still operate with less than five leaders.
"Rather than disputing it we had better conduct selection," he said.
Patrialis said the President appreciated the recent decision of the House of Representatives (DPR) to reject the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) Number 4 of 2009 on acting leadership of KPK.
Right now, the government was still waiting for a letter on the decision from the DPR and would immediately submit a bill on the revocation of the Perppu to the DPR.
He predicted the bill on the revocation of the Perppu would have been submitted next month.
After the bill is passed the government would then revoke its decision on Tumpak`s appointment as acting chief of the KPK.
Only after that would the ministry of justice and human rights form a selection committee to find Tumpak`s replacement.
"Do not consider it an extravagance as the selection is very important for the nation. We will start next month but we need to first set up the committee," he said.(*)Editor: Heru
