Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The National Defense Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) will remain alert and always be ready to deal with the threat of terrorism in the country, Indonesia`s military chief said.
TNI chief Gen Djoko Santoso said here on Monday the TNI and Polri would continue to be on full alert to anticipate the threat of terrorism as part of their duties to ensure safety, security, and public order.
"The joint exercise between the TNI and Polri has strategic, tactical, and psychologist aspects because it is the main capital in the operation against terrorism," Djoko Santoso said after closing a joint TNI/Polri anti-terror exercise here Monday.
The TNI chief said terrorism was caused by various factors related to economic and social conditions, and therefore comprehensive efforts should be made to deal with it.
He said the TNI and Polri were the main components in the fight against terrorism, but they should also be supported by the other components of the nation.
"In accordance with developments in the strategic environment, terrorism is the common threat and common enemy, and therefore we should fight it together through among others, a joint TNI/Polri exercise," the TNI chief said.
Meanwhile, National Defense Forces (TNI) Headquarters spokesman Commodore Sagom Tamboen said here last Friday that Indonesia had tightened security in all its land and maritime border regions following the discovery of terrorist activity led by a militant previously known to be operating in a neighboring country.
"Since a few days ago, all military commands of regions bordering on foreign countries have been stepping up security along our land and sea borders to minimize the possibility of terrorists entering or leaving Indonesian territory," Sagom Tamboen said.
The security beefing up measures would continue to be taken indefinitely "because there is also no respite in terrorist activity," he said.
"Measures to enhance security have not only been taken in regions bordering on Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines through which terrorists and their weapons `traditionally` pass through but also in a number of other regions considered passable by terrorists," Sagom said.
