Jakarta (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Japan's Sanyo Electric Co. (TSE:6764) plans to ramp up Indonesian production of LCD televisions more than fivefold to an annual 1 million units by 2011.

The move comes in response to growing demand for LCD TVs as income levels rise in a number of Asian countries and elsewhere. Local subsidiary PT Sanyo Electronics Indonesia has already started churning out 19-, 24-, 32- and 42-inch sets.

Output, which reached just 200,000 units in 2009, will be boosted to 700,000 units this year. Sanyo will continue to export 80 per cent of the TVs and sell the rest in the Indonesian market.
