Bogor, W Java (ANTARA News) - A garbage slide triggered by heavy rains at the Galuga dump site in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday killed four people and injured seven others.
All the dead victims were scavengers and their bodies had been evacuated, Bogor district administration spokesman Suhandri said.

He said all the dead victims still could not be identified.

The garbage slide occurred at around 04.30 p.m. following heavy rains since Tuesday morning, he said.

All the injured had been rushed to nearby hospital for intensive medical treatment, he said.

A team of 40 disaster mitigation officers divided into two groups had been sent to the scene to anticipate the possibility of another garbage slide, he said.

"We fear another garbage slide will occur so we sent many personnel there," he said.
Earlier on February 19, a garbage slide also buried four hectares of paddy field near the dump site.

Meanwhile, chief of the Bogor police resort Adjunct Chief Commissioner Tomex Koeniawan said the garbage slide was not merely caused by heavy rains but also by collapsed concrete pillars.

The pillars fell on the scavengers who happened to collect used articles at the dump site, he said.

"The garbage slide was not merely caused by the heavy rains but also by poor concrete pillars which hold up the garbage," he said. (*)
