Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has sent a two-member Water and Sanitation team to Haiti to help provide clean water supply in the earthquake-devastated country.
Erza Adimenggala and Harliandi Mahardika left for Haiti last Tuesday (March 16) and will stay in Leogane, Haiti, for about a month.
In Haiti, they will help clean water process and distribution for the quake`s victims in cooperation with the Spanish Red Cross.
The PMI had earlier sent personnel in two stages as part of the Water and Sanitation team to Haiti. PMI`s staff members who have already been in Haiti, reported that clean water facilities in Haiti had been totally destroyed by the natural disaster.
Entering the third month after the disaster, all infrastructures in Haiti were still in ruin and the quake`s victims still desperately needed help, Erza Adi Menggala said.
The Indonesians sent to Haiti have had experiences in assisting quake-hit regions such as in Padang (West Sumatra) and Yogyakarta.
Since February 21, 2010, they have distributed more than 30 million liters of water to Haitians.
Under the coordination of the International Red Cross and Crescent, there are at least 21 Emergency Response Units (ERU) operating in Haiti.(*)
