5.5 quake jolts Banda Aceh

Banda Aceh (ANTARA News) - A magnitude 5.5 quake rattled Banda Aceh and its surrounding areas at 4.43pm local time on Wednesday, causing panic particularly on those staying in story buildings.
An official at the Mata Ie Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) station, Vina, said the epicenter of the quake was around 90 kilometers northwest of Meulaboh, West Java.
"Meulaboh is the closest to the epicenter. We however have not received information about the impact of the temblors on the city," she said.
The quake was felt by the people in the provincial capital Banda Aceh. Some panicked when the quake hit and those staying in storey buildings immediately ran down for safety.
Some motorists however said they did not feel the temblor. "I do not know if a quake has happened. Perhaps it was because at the time I was in the car," Nuriah, a resident of Banda Aceh said.
Aceh was hit by a huge quake that caused a tsunami on December 26, 2004. leaving more than 200,000 people dead or gone missing and more than 100,000 houses and various public facilities destroyed.
Since the huge quake in 2004, small quakes have often been recorded to happen there.(*)Editor: Heru
