Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Thousands of Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) members and sympathizers gathered at the National Monument (Monas) here Saturday for a rally to express solidarity with Palestine.
After conducting noon prayers at 12.30 west Indonesian standard time (WIB), the crowd consisting of men, women and children gathered in the Monas area while singing Islamic acapella songs to voice their support for Palestine.
A PKS functionary, Ahmad Mabruri, said the rally was held to meet a call from the International Ulema Association on all Muslims to protect the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem from Israeli invasion.
Mabruri said the rally would be followed by a long march from the Monas area to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle and back again to Monas.
He added the event was also participated in by former PKS chairman Hidayat Nur Wahid who was now chief of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Board (BKSAP) at the House of Representatives.
Tension between Israel and Palestinians flared again recently after the Israeli government last Tuesday (March 9) decided to build 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem.
The decision outraged a large number of Palestinians and Arabs and threatened efforts to revive stalled peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis. (*)Editor: Aditia Maruli
