Eight wounded in Cathay Pacific emergency landing

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - A Cathay Pacific aircraft with flight number CX780 from the Indonesian city of Surabaya made an emergency landing at Hong Kong International Airport on Tuesday at 13.43 local time.
Eight passengers of the A330 aircraft suffered injuries and were taken to hospitals by Cathay Pacific airport staff, the airline said in a press statement also received by ANTARA here Tuesday.
The ill-fated plane reportedly had 309 passengers and a crew of 13 on board. "Cathay Pacific is working closely with the Civil Aviation Department in investigating the incident," it said.
The airline`s spokesman said the left engine of the aircraft shut down as it was approaching the Hong Kong International Airport runway, while but the other engine was running.
During the landing, all the four left tyres deflated, while two of the right landing gears also deflated, he said.
The tyres of an A330 were designed to deflate autommatically as soon as the breaks of the plane had been strongly appliedto avoid the tyres form bursting. Such landings usually produced smoke and dust as the tyres become hot and deflate, he said.
The ill-fated aircraft entered into service with Cathay Pacific in 1998 and it had been through all the checks and service procedures recommended by its manufacturer, Airbus.
The spokesman further said that all the passengers who had no need for hospital treatment had left the airport, with the assistance and support of Cathay Pacific personnel.
Cathay Pacific staff were also present at Princess Margaret Hospital and Yan Chai Hospital to assist the injured passengers, their friends and relatives, he said.(*)Editor: Aditia Maruli
