Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Director General for Utilization of Energy and Electricity J Purwono said he and House Commission VII on energy affairs would discuss the details of the government plan to raise the basic rates of electricity (TDL).

"We need to discuss with the House Commission and get its approval for a rate increase in each category of electricity consumers," the director general said here on Monday.

A House plenary on Monday approved a subsidy budget of Rp55.1 trillion for electricity, with the assumption that the power rates would be raised by an average of 10 percent beginning July 2010.

"The increases in electricity tariffs, including for industries, will be set at between 10 and 11 percent," Purwono said.

Commission VII member Dito Ganinduto said based on the results of the commission`s meetings with the ministry of energy and mineral resources, the tariffs of 450 VA and 900 VA category consumers would not be raised.

While other categories will have their tariffs raised by an average of 10 percent.
Previously, the government has proposed that the electricity basic tariffs should be raised at an average of 15 percent beginning July 2010. With this average, the state-owned power utility company (PLN) would need a subsidy of Rp53.7 trillion. This increase will be able to cover Rp7.29 trillion of needed subsidy.

But the House only approved an average of 10 percent increase with additional subsidy assumption of Rp55.1 trillion. (*)
