Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA News) - National Education Minister Mohammad Nuh has asked Surabaya State University (Unesa) to focus its attention on creating qualified teachers.

"Unesa should focus its attention on creating qualified teachers for this country," the minister said on a function to install Unsea rector Muchlas Samani for 2010-2015 period here on Saturday.

Mohammad Nuh said the university which used to be the Surabaya Institute for Teachers Training and Education (IKIP Surabaya) should be able to create qualified teachers who can apply and propagate their knowledge to the public, especially the students.

"The teachers created by Unesa should focus their attention not only on the teaching and learning process but also be able to apply and propagate their knowledge to the public," the education minister said.

He added that the government had allocated 70 percent of funds from the total education budget for teachers and lecturers salary while the rest of the funds would be used for education development.

"With the big allocation of funds for the educators salary, they are expected to their teaching quality and capability," said the former information and communication minister.

The minister added that up to 2014 the government would still need around 700,000 new and qualified teachers and it was the responsibility of Unesa and other related universities to make it possible.

"It is the main task of related universities to create the new and qualified teachers," Mohammad Nuh said.

He said there are 2.6 million teachers in Indonesia, and around 57.4 percent or some 1.5 million of whom have Strata-1 degree while the rests are still vying to gain teaching certificate.

Meanwhile, the Unesa new rector Muchlas Samani said he would make every effort to turn the university into a campus that is able to create qualified teachers.

"We are going to prioritize the development of science education in our effort to create qualified teachers," Muchlas Samani said. (*)
