Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the police here on Tuesday to continue their investigations into tax fraud cases.

In his speech at the commemoration of the National Police`s 64th anniversary, the President asked the force to prioritize law enforcement in the fiscal field.

"The fight against corruption must be intensified. Continue your tasks in enforcing the law against those committing tax crimes," he said.

The fight against tax crimes was very important in the midst of the government`s current efforts to reduce the country`s financial indebtedness to foreign parties and increase the state`s income from taxes, he said.

Yudhoyono also called on the police to pay special attention to marginalized people who lack the financial means to protect themselves.

He also called on the police to continue fighting terrorism by prioritizing preventive efforts and keeping youths from being recruited by terror groups or becoming victims of terrorism.
Regarding the fight against drug abuse, the head of state called on the police to continue rooting out drug production and distribution rings.

The police, he said, must also preserve their reputation and ensure the maintenance of public order and security.

President Yudhoyono reminded his audience that certain people might not like the police because they had once been treated unfairly or improperly by police officers.(*)
