President Yudhoyono opens 7th conference of Asian constitutional court judges

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Tuesday opens the 7th Conference of Asian Constitutional Court Judges at the Presidential Palace.
The conference held from July 12 to 15, 2010 is a forum of exchange of experience and information between the constitutional court judges with regard to their handling of constitutional cases or the best state practices in the respective countries.
The 7th conference is not only participated in by representatives from Asia but also from other countries. This year`s event discusses the development of election laws.
During the conference, leaders of Constitutional Courts from seven countries in Asia have agreed to form an association which aims to promote human rights protection, democracy, implementation of laws, constitutional court`s independence and also exchange of information among the members.
The commitment is implemented on a Jakarta declaration signed by seven leaders of Asian Constitutional Courts namely Mahfud MD (Indonesia), Dong Heub-Lee (South Korea), Tun Zaki Tun Azmi (Malaysia), Jamran Byambador (Mongolia), Mariano C Del Castillo (the Philippine), Cut Chonlavorn (Thailand) and Bakhtiyar Mirbabaev (Uzbekistan).
The Conference of Asian Constitutional Court Judges was first held in Jakarta in September 2003, and held once a year afterward.
Later the conference was held in Bangkok, Thailand in 2004, then in Jiaanbatar, Mongolia, and the fourth was held in Manila in 2006, and in Seoul, South Korea in 2007, and again in Jiaanbatar in 2009.
Indonesia is chosen to host of this year`s event due to its success in handling obstacles during the election season.
