Dumai, Riau (ANTARA News) - Drug smuggling from Malaysia is allegedly masterminded by an international syndicate, an Indonesian security officer said here, Thursday.
This is shown by the vast drug smuggling activity in large quantities with more reckless and sophisticated ways, that sometimes caused trouble to the police, said Dumai Police Chief Ajunct Senior Commisssioner Hersadwi Rusdiono at his office.
"Within the last six months from January 2010, Dumai Police has dealt with 37 drug smuggling cases, with eight of them transferred from the local Customs office," he said.
The eight transferred cases are obtained from a regular examination at Dumai Port from Malaysia.
"These indications made us assume an international syndicate is behind all of these smuggling attempts," he said.
Some 16.6 kilograms of narcotics worth billions of rupiahs are seized from 37 cases, considering they were worth up to two billion rupiah per kilo.
As many as 53 people had been declared suspects for drug smuggling by the police, and now must undergo further investigation and legal courts in Dumai.
"Two of the 53 suspects were underage," said Hersadwi. (*)Editor: B Kunto Wibisono
