Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and Norway are in the process of forming a joint committee to follow up on a forestry agreement between the two countries, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan has said.

"The governments of Indonesia and Norway will form a joint committee," Zulkifli said at the presidential office here on Wednesday.

He explained that the joint committee would be formed to discuss various technical issues, especially relating to the implementation and management of a financial institution to manage the results of cooperation between the two countries.

Zulkifli said the committee would also discuss technical status and regulation about the flow of funds to Indonesia in terms of forestry cooperation with Norway.

He predicted that the discussion to form the joint committee would be completed in August this year.

He also said the formation of the joint committee was also in line with the substance of a meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and UN Secretary General`s special adviser for climate change affairs George Soros in Bali recently.

At the meeting with President Yudhoyono, Soros said he had learned about forestry problem in Indonesia, and asked about the progress which had been met in the application of the Letter of Intent between Indonesia and Norway about forestry in which Norway had a commitment to paying US1 billion if Indonesia kept and preserve its forest.

On the occasion President Yudhoyono expressed hope to Soros that countries in the would would do more to promote the results of the conference in Copenhagen, Denmar, in December 2009 for the formulation of replacement for the Kyoto Protocol that would expire in 2012.

The Head of State also conveyed the priority agenda Indonesia would carry out in fighting illegal logging and reducing the rate of forest encroachment.
