Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Composite Stock Price Index at the Indonesian Stock Exchange here Thursday morning got off to a strong start despite Wall Street losses.
The JKSE index gained 2.640 points or 0.09 percent to 3,060.279 points and the LQ-45 index rose 0.632 point or 0.11 percent to 589.190 points.
US stocks fell on Wednesday after weak durable goods figures and a downbeat assessment of the economy from the Fed`s Beige Book kept the benchmark S&P 500 trapped below its 200-day moving average.
The Indonesian stocks were boosted by the rupiah`s surge to below Rp9,000 per US dollar, according to Krisna Dwi Setiawan, a foreign exchange analyst of PT Valbury Asia Securities.
The market`s positive support encouraged investors to buy small-cap shares with potentials to move upward, he said.
Among top gainers on the Indonesian bourse were automotive industry Astra International shares that rose Rp700 to Rp51,500, tyre company Good Year shares that climbed Rp400 to Rp13,900, and cigarette company Gudang Garam shares that went up Rp200 to Rp35,050 per share.
State-owned bank BRI shares stepped up Rp50 to Rp9,950, private bank BCA shares surged Rp50 to Rp6,050 per share.
Meanwhile, the rupiah traded Rp8,995-Rp9,005 per US dollar, up five points or just 0.1 percent from Rp9,000-Rp9,010 per US dollar at the market`s close a day earlier.(*)
