Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan Province (ANTARA News) - Tens of houses have been swept away by floods in Tanah Bumbu District, South Kalimantan, leaving a number of people homeless.

"We are currently collecting data on houses swept away or seriously damaged by floods at six villages. Hopefully it will be completed on Friday (July 30)," Ahmadi, a local official, said here Thursday.

Many residents suffered from extreme mental stress because their houses had been carried away or damaged by floods, he said. Some others suffered from respiratory problems, skin diseases and influenza because of the inundations, he added.

The local authorities have set up emergency health posts to help thousands of refugees staying at six refugee centers, he said.

The South Kalimantan provincial administration has sent three doctors to serve flood victims.Major floods had earlier hit Tanah Laut and Tanah Bumbu districts in South Kalimantan Province.

In Tanah Laut, the floodwaters reaching a height of two meters had submerged thousands of houses, especially in Jorong and Bati-Bati sub districts.

Incessant heavy rains over the past few days have triggered floods which inundated thousands of houses at Sungai Danau, Jombang, Bukit Baru, Sinar Bulang and Satui villages.

Some 1,640 families or 5,000 people have been affected by the floods. (*)
