Tasikmalaya, W Java (ANTARA News) - Ten percent of 160 earthquake and tsunami detecting instruments in Indonesia is out of order.
But Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) spokesman Ing Ediansjah said here on Thursday that although ten percent of the instrument has been damaged, it did not hamper earthquake and tsunami detection system.
"Although one can be out of order, the other still works well and remains usable," Ing Ediansjah said when providing technical guidance on disaster early warning system at Mangkubumi Hotel here.
On the occasion he explained that the earthquake and tsunami detecting instruments function collectively or in parallel so when one of them is out of order, the rests still function well.
He pointed out that although the earthquake and tsunami detecting equipment which was installed at Pangandaran Beach in Ciamis District was out of order, the one at Cipatujuh Beach could make the detection.
"Therefore, the potential of earthquake and tsunami can still be read or detected because the instruments work collectively," he said.
Ediansjah said the damage of the tsunami detection instrument could be monitored and repaired immediately, and therefore if one of them was out of order the people should not worry about it or get panic because the rests could still work well.
"I say the people should not worry if one instrument is out of order because the rest can detect the possible earthquake or tsunami," Ediansjah said.
In the technical guidance on disaster early warning system, attended by representatives from local government and community, Ediansjah explained several ways of how to save oneself when earthquake and tsunami struck.
He explained that the people in a room when an earthquake happened should save themselves by covering their heads or bodies from falling debris while running to an open space.
And when at the open space or out of a building, the people could save themselves by staying away from electric pole, trees, and tall buildings. (*)
