Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono warned here Friday there was no longer any need for a dichotomy of military and non-military camps in building Indonesia was unnecessary.

In his address before participants of a workshop on defense leadership held the State Palace here, the head of state said that the distance of civilian and military factions was no more needed in democratic Indonesia.

"I think this era does not need civilian and military dichotomy in doing the state`s duties. In the past, there were distances between the civilian and military camps, and between university students and military academy cadets. But, as a result of its internal reformation, the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) has no longer carried out practical politics. Differences have indeed been observable in this democratic era," he said.

President Yudhoyono also asked the TNI officers to keep holding a life-time learning principle because the educational opportunities in military career just took one third portion of ones` career history.

About the meaning of patriotism, the head of states said it was not just limited to those going to war to defend the country but also those doing their best for the nation`s progress and pride.

President Yudhoyono also reminded the entire nation of achieving Indonesia`s ultimate goal in the 21st Century, namely a well-developed, prosperous, and civilized country with high dignity.

For this purpose, young Indonesians who would lead the nation should become a religious, rational, innovative, and culturally-excellent figure, he said.

This firstly-held workshop was participated in by 48 TNI officers, including President Yudhoyono`s son, Captain (Inf) Agus Harimurti and civilian academics from various universities.

This six-day workshop, which was meant to prepare future leaders in the country, provided the participants with such course material as leadership, defense vision, and military and non-military threats.(*)
