Kendari, SE Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The government is providing a monthly allowance of Rp1.3 million to 816 teachers each in disaster-prone areas in Southeast Sulawesi, an official said.
"The allowance for teachers in disaster-prone areas is aimed at motivating them to perform their duties well," Head of the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Education Office Damsid said here on Friday.
The allowance was taken from the state budget, he said.
Damsid said the allowance was among the four kinds of allowance channeled through the Directorate General for Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Staff at the National Education Ministry.
The other three kinds of allowance were those for teachers stationed in remote areas, backward areas and hinterland, he said.
In addition, he said the government also provided a monthly incentive of Rp200 thousand to non-civil servant teachers each in the province.
"The amount is far from expectation but the monthly incentive of Rp200 thousand is a manifestation of the government`s attention to non-civil servant teachers," he said.
Separately, on Friday, Yaudu Salam Aajo, chairman of the Commission IV of the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Legislative Council, said the allowances for teachers in disaster-prone areas and incentives for non-civil servant teachers would hopefully motivate them to perform their duties well.
"Make sure that the government, the House of Representatives and the Provincial Legislative Council will all the time struggle for the teachers` welfare because they are the spearhead of human resources development," Yaudu said. (*)
