President Yudhoyono receives senior German parliamentarian

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here Wednesday received senior German politician Volker Kauder, the chairman of the Christian-Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian- Socialist Union (CSU faction in the German parliament.

On the occasion Volker asked Indonesia to cooperate in strengthening global economic structure in an effort to save the world from financial crisis in the future.

"I am impressed by the way Indonesia was able to get out of the economic crisis which hit the country in the past. Therefore, at the meeting I exchanged ideas with President Yudhoyono about ways in which we can strengthen the global economic structure," Volker said after the meeting.

At the meeting, Volker also extended an invitation from German Chancellor Angela Merkel for President Yudhoyono to a meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Summit in Brussels in October this year.

Volker said Merkel wanted to meet President Yudhoyono to talk about efforts to strengthen the world`s economic structure within the G-20 framework in order to avoid financial crises in the future.

"Merkel has expressed hope that Indonesia and Germany could cooperate within the G-20 framework to promote the idea of strengthening the world`s economy, trade, and stock markets," Volker said.

He added the Asian and European regions should have well balanced trade relations so as to bring benefits to all parties and to improve cooperation in the field of high technology development and energy conservation.

Volker said Indonesia was important to Germany and therefore was always following developments in Indonesia, as well as in Japan and China.

RI-Germany diplomatic relations were already running well and would continue to be improved.

"Germany and Indonesia in the international community have many things in common and therefore we will continue to cooperate," Volker said.

He also admired Indonesian democracy which upheld religious tolerance and harmony.
Meanwhile, presidential spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said President Yudhoyono had also invited Chancellor Angela Merkel to visit Indonesia.

Teuku Faizasyah said Volker was visiting Indonesia also to explore the possibility of a visit by Chancellor Merkel.
