Densus 88 arrest two suspected robbers in Medan

Medan, North Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Police anti-terror unit Densus 88 arrested two suspected bank robbers in Medan, North Sumatra, recently following a raid at a house in Lubuk Pakam, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, on Saturday.
North Sumatra regional police spokesman Senior Commissioner Baharudin Djafar said the two were known by their initials as Y and D.
He said the raid lasted for about 40 minutes from 1.50pm to 2.30pm, done after the police found the two`s alleged involvement in the robbery in Medan that the regional police command was just developing.
Bahrudin Djafar could not as yet confirm their concrete involvement in the CIMB Niaga Bank robbery recently that left one police officer dead.
"We are still developing not only the CIMB Bank robbery case but also other violent crimes," he said.
He denied there had been a shootout between Densus 88 members and the two suspects.
However he said that Densus 88 members had indeed fired a shot when they tried to break open the door of the house. It is one of the raid procedures, he said.
He said after the raid the police confiscated a motorcycle believed to have been used by the two in their criminal action.
He said the two were now being held and interrogated at Deli Serdang police station.
A gang of 16 robbbers robbed CIMB Niaga Bank at around 12.00 hours on August 16, 2010.
In their action they had killed one police Mobile Brigade member Brigadier Immanuel Simanjuntak and made off with more Rp300 million worth of cash and a gun belonging the dead member.
The robbery was very dramatic as it was done at a daylight by a quite big number of people all carrying assault rifles. The footage of the robbery had been aired on television nationwide. (*)
