Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA News) - The welfare of outer island communities in Indonesia need to be improved in order to help the government to save its territorial sovereignty, a spokesman said.

"Improving the welfare of the people outer islands should be a priority of the Government," Vice Marshal Dikdik Amir Hasan of the national resilience institution in Batam said here Wednesday.

Improved welfare can be realized by allocating facilities and infrastructure for health, education, economy, transportation and communications.

Transportation and communication facilities are needed to provide information if there are some people infiltrated the islands," he said.

As an area in the borderland, Batam has several islands adjacent to the neighboring countries.

That islands are Pelampung island in Terong island, Nipah island which is now used as a regional defense area, Batu Beranti island and Putri island in Nongsa.(*)
