Depok, West Java (ANTARA News) - The University of Indonesia (UI) is building a new library which will be the biggest library in the world and is scheduled to become operational early next year, UI`s spokesman Vishnu Juwono said here Thursday.

"The library is now already 80 percent completed," he said.

The library located near the UI rector`s office, covers 33,000 square meters, Vishnu noted.

On another occasion, UI rector Prof. Dr. der Soz. Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri said the library would be open academicians as well as the general public as well.

He said the library is a realization of UI`s commitment to the people and is also part of its efforts to build itself into a world class university.

According to Gumilar, the library is designed to collect books besides functioning as a source of inspiration for the students and the general public in building knowledge.

"The project is scheduled to be opened by the president during the commemoration of the national education day," he said.

The library will have six million volumes of books, exceeding the one in Hong Kong.
The library will have beautiful gardens and artificial lakes to please the visitors.

The library construction will cost Rp200 billion, to be derived mostly from the state budget, and to be used for the procurement of books, too.
