Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he was disappointed at the way of handling a problem that led to an attack on the Biau police precinct in Central Sulawesi on Monday.

"Such an incident could actually be avoided if all security personnel in the region worked properly," he said when opening a cabinet session at the Presidential Office here on Thursday.

If a problem was handled and settled properly, clashes and fatalities could be avoided, he said.

"I will ask the relevant governor, district head and police to account for the incident. Likewise, I will also ask what the Indonesian military in the region has done to overcome the problem," he said.

The head of state said the governor, district head and subdistrict head should actively hold communication with the public to prevent the local security condition from deteriorating.

Yudhoyono called for thorough investigation into the case. "I order investigation to take measures against those violating the law and against those neglecting their duties. Otherwise, there will be many people who will neglect their duties," he said.

Police have named four people as suspects in the August 31 attack on the Biau police precinct in Central Sulawesi province which claimed the lives of seven people.

They were named suspects after they had been involved in anarchic acts during the rioting, spokesman for the National Police Headquarters Brig. Gen. Iskandar Hasan said on Thursday.

The police also investigated the chief of the Biau police precinct and his men handling the traffic accident involving a local resident, Kasmir Timumun who was later detained and died of alleged manhandling at the police precinct.

The attack was believed to have been triggered by Kasmir`s death.

On Tuesday night, thousands of people flocked to the police resort to protest against Kasmir`s death. Police fired warning shots but the mob continued to attack the police resort, leaving seven people dead.

The National Police Headquarters on Wednesday sent a team of investigators led by National Police Deputy Chief Comsr. Gen. Jusuf Manggabarani to probe the attack.(*)
