Jakarta (ANTARA News) - National Police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said he would act against members who were found guilty later in connection with the death of a police detainee in Buol, Central Sulawesi, recently.

Before attending a cabinet meeting here on Thursday he said the police had sent a team to investigate the case.

While the police is investigating the case he called on the people to remain calm and not to resort to violence.

"Refer it to the existing procedures, to the police for investigation. Later if our member is found guilty we will take an action. For the time being let no violence happen that would only cause damage," he said.

He said the police team that includes the vice chief of the National Police had also invited the House of Representatives Law, Security and Human Rights Commission III as well as the National Commission on Human Rights to find out the facts in the field.

"If it is a suicide case well we will explain it to the public. If anomalies are found we will ask doctors to check them," he said.

He admitted that it seemed that someone had spread rumours that police had acted brutally on the detainee, known as Kasmir Timumum, causing the people to be angry and conducting violence.

"Finally people gathered and conducted violence, destructions and others, ignoring a warning shot from a police member," he said.

Bambang said two company-level units from the Mobile Brigade headquarters had been sent there to prevent violence and destruction from spreading.

He said he had received a report from the Buol police chief Senior Commissioner Amin Litarso that seven people had died after the clash that occured between the police and people following rumours about the death of the detainee.

Kasmir Timumum was held in connection with a traffic accident that made a Buol Police member being treated at a hospital for a broken bone.

Kasmir was believed to have hit Ridwan the police officer while he was working to stop motocyclists from conducting a speeding activity.

Last Monday the police discovered Kasmir dead hanging in the cell.

According to the results of an autopsy by dr I Made Darmawan of Buol Regional Hospital, Kasmir`s death was caused by a broken bone and a pinch on his respiratory tract and it showed no signs of suicide.

Because of that villagers had asked for clarification from the police that later led to a clash between them.(*)
