Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Former justice minister Muladi has been named to lead lawyers to defend Golkar Party cadres named suspects in a corruption case recently.
Muladi who is now the party`s associate chairman for legal and human rights affairs will lead the team of lawyers that would give advice and legal opinions to the suspects if needed, Golkar Party vice general chairman Agung Laksono said here on Friday.
"Muladi will be the commander," he said when met at the presidential palace compound.
Agung said the party would not object if the suspects would rather choose their lawyers by themselves.
He said Golkar respects the legal process that is going on. He said while waiting for the process to continue Golkar would study the case including to see if there were political elements involved.
"We are providing a legal aid team that will monitor the process so that in case arbitration happens or the process deviates to a political area our legal experts could professionally deal with them," he said.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) recently named 26 members of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the period of 1999-2004 suspects in connection with a bribery case relating to the election of Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor Miranda Goeltom in 2004.
