Jakarta, September (ANTARA News) - A thousand members of islamic mass organization Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) held a rally in front of the United States Embassy in Jakarta on Saturday protesting the Koran burning plan in the US.

The plan was recently announced by a US-based organization, Dove World Outreach Center, and intended to mark the September 11, 2001 tragedy in New York.

During their rally, HTI members brought several posters condemning the Koran burning plan with one reading "Jihad to protect Koran". HTI spokesman Muhammad Ismail Yusanto said the organization strongly condemned the plan as it was a cruel, uncivilised and disrespectful act towards the Koran, the holy book of Islam.

"The plan not only insults the holy Koran but also Islam and Muslims around the world," Yusanto said adding that inter-religious conflicts would happen if Dove World Outreach Center realized its plan to burn the Koran next September 11.

Similar rallies happened in Banjarmasin (South Kalimantan), Palembang (South Sumatera), Sumenep (East Java) and Bandung (West Java).

The Koran burning plan was not only opposed by Muslims in Indonesia but also certain elements of American society.

One of the Americans who expressed her deep concern was Jennifer S.Byron.
In her recent article published in Newsweek-Washington Post online, Jennifer called on American Christians to reject the "Burn a Quran Day".

She said the "Burn a Quran Day" was the way of a church in Florida to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11 incident.

"So far the Christian response to this in America has been nearly dead silence."

"The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) has issued a press release opposing Burn a Quran Day. This is good, but it is basically just a statement to assure non-Evangelical Christians that Terry Jones does not represent authentic Evangelical Christianity," Jennifer said.

The September 11, 2001 attacks on American soil were launched by members of the Al Qaidah and killed several thousand people especially in New York City`s Twin Tower buildings. (*)
