Palembang, South Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Malaysian budget carrier Air Asia plans to resume its Kuala Lumpur-Palembang flights in October this year after nearly eight months of stoppage, a spokesman said.
The airline company would resume the flights in October 2010, the general manager of state airport operator Angkasa Pura II, Yon Sugiono, said here on Sunday.
Air Asia closed the flight route on February 2010, citing the low number of passengers as the reason.
He said the airline company`s plan to resume the flight route had to do with the election of Palembang to host the 26th SEA Games in 2011.
Palembang will be the third SEA Games host city that is not the national capital, after Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
The South Sumatra provincial capital will become the main host, while Jakarta will be the supporting co-host. As the main host, Palembang will only hold 20 of 44 sports, the rest will be held by a co-host city.
It was the South Sumatra governor who asked Air Asia to resume the flight route and the Malaysian airline company agreed to do so, Sugiono said.
He said Air Asia would operate planes with a capacity of carrying more than 200 passengers.
The management of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II international airport also had asked Singapore`s Silk Air to fly to Palembang three times a week, he said.
