Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan  (ANTARA News) - The agricultural sector contributed 1.94 percent to South Kalimantan`s economic growth rate in the second quarter of 2010, according to a Bank Indonesia report.

The province`s economy grew 5.97 percent in the second quarter of 2010 from 5.39 percent in the previous quarter, fueled by the rapid growth of agricultural, mining, trade and manufacturing industries, Agus Hartanto, head of the monetary economy division at Bank Indonesia office in South Kalimantan, said on Sunday.

The agricultural sector grew 7.19 percent in the second quarter, a 1.72 percent increase compared to 5.47 percent in the first quarter, he said.

Data from the Bank Indonesia office also suggested food crops production in the May-August 2010 period was estimated to have increased 7.98 percent to 284.09 thousand tons from 263.1 thousand tons a year earlier.

A surge in the prices of mining products, coal in particular, in the international market also pushed up the second quarter growth, he said.

The mining sector grew 5.97 percent in the second quarter compared to 4.53 percent in the previous quarter on high demand for coal to generate electricity, he said.

He said the trade sector expanded 8.65 percent in the second quarter from 7.59 percent in the first quarter and the manufacturing industry grew 2.12 percent from 2.07 percent.
