Indramayu, West Java (ANTARA News) - On Tuesday, only three days ahead of Idul Fitri festivity, a multitude of holiday travelers on buses, private cars, and motorbikes were streaming along the north coastal highway of Java at Indramayu district.

According to Sunarto, a traffic official here on Tuesday, the number of motor vehicles passing the highway at Indramayu continued to increase since early in the morning.

He said that as of Tuesday morning the number of passenger buses, private cars, and motorbikes increased dramatically, although the road was rather slippery following an incessant heavy rains the previous days.

"The north coastal highway here, leading to central and eastern parts of Java island, since Sunday until Monday evening was drenched by incessant heavy rains, but it luckily turned to clear up on Tuesday morning and that the traveler could continue their trip," Sunatro said.

On Sunday and Monday the travelers on motorbikes along that highway were hampered by the heavy rain.

The rain which started on Sunday evening and continued until early Monday evening forced them to take shelter at a number of gas stations and casual markets along the way in Indramayu, West Java.

After performing their morning prayers and the rain had subsided, they continued their trips to their respective home villages to observe the Idul Fitri festivity with relatives.

Sutrisno, one of the travelers from Jakarta who was going to his home village in Tegal, said rain from Karawang until Indramayu districts hampered his trip and would cause him to arrive late at his destination.

"The heavy rain forced us to slow down to avoid accidents that frequently happen on the northern coastal highway," Sutrisno said, adding that he would arrive late in Tegal.

Meanwhile, another motorbike rider, Ridwan, said the rain made the road slippery and dangerous so they had to ride extra carefully to avoid accident.

"Better late than never. Heavy rain forced us to drive slowly and carefully in order to arrive safely at our home towns to observe Idul Fitry with relatives," Ridwan said. (*)
