Bakauheni, Lampung Selatan (ANTARA) - A total of 53,544 Lebaran holiday travelers from Java island arrived on Tuesday at Bakauheni ferry port here on Tuesday morning.

Traveling by buses, private cars, and on motorbikes, the travelers were transported by a number of ferry ships from Merak port in Banten district.

But PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry operation manager Zailis Anas said here on Tuesday that the number of arrivals was less than that earlier on Monday which made 60,517 passengers.

Zailis said that on Monday a total of 60,157 holiday travelers from Merak port arrived at Bakauheni.

He added that the number of arriving passengers at Bakuheni port, southern Sumatra Island, Monday, rose by 121,826 from 48,691 on Sunday.

While the number of vehicles transported by 27 ferry ships from Merak port on 96 trips on Monday also rose to 11,764 units from Sunday`s 8,761.

"The number of passengers arriving here on Friday, or seven days before the Idul Fitri festivity to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting month, reached 30,885 with the number of vehicles of various types reaching 6,076 units," Zailis Anas said.

And the passengers who left Bakauheni for Merak port in Banten district on Sunday also rose sharply to 37,175 with an increase of 7,369 people from 29,806 on the previous day.

"The number of passengers leaving Bakauheni for Merak rose significantly on Sunday but the density was still dominated or doubled by those arriving from Merak," Zailis said.

He said the people arriving at Bakauheni or leaving for Merak mostly traveled by buses, private cars, and the rests by motorbikes.

The PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry spokesman predicted that Bakauheni ferry port would continue to be inundated by Lebaran holiday travelers until one day before Idul Fitri festivity on Friday to mark the end.(*)
