Jakarta (ANTARA News) - There is a possibility that five Indonesian fishermen being held by Malaysian marine police would be released soon, spokesman for the Indonesian fishermen`s association said here, Wednesday.
The secretary general of the People`s Coalition for Fishery Justice (Kiara), Riza Damanik said the fishermen detained by Malaysian Marine Police on September 3, 2010, would be released soon.
The arrest of the five Indonesian fishermen took place 30-40 miles of Malaysian shore which was within the Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone.
Another fact was that the boat of the fishermen had a leakage, and they were seeking help under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
"Based on those facts, I believe that they (fishermen) can be released as soon as possible and return to their base," he said.
The Indonesian team handling the case will be accompanied by the Consul General in Penang Chilman Arisman who was scheduled to meet the six fishermen.
