President performs Idul Fitri prayers at Istiqlal Mosque

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono attended an Idul Fitri prayer service at Jakarta`s Istiqlal Grand Mosque at 7 on Friday morning.
Besides the head of state, Vice President Boediono and other state officials also attended the service where the Idul Fitri sermon was delivered by Prof Nur Syam, rector of Sunan Ampel State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN Sunan Ampel).
Leading the prayer service was the imam of Istiqlal Mosque, Hasanuddin Sinaga, who is concurrently a lecturer of Syarif Hidahyatullah Islamic State University (UIN Syarif Hidayatullah).
President Yudhoyono and Vice President Boediono arrived at the mosque at 6.50 am, or five minutes before the start of the Idul Fitri prayer service.
Under tight security, the service at Southeast Asia`s largest mosque (capacity 120,000) was also attended by thousands of Muslims from all corners of the city.
Earlier, on Thursday night, the head of state was also at Istiqlal mosque to participate in a tabligh akbar, an event marking the eve of Idul Fitri where the congregation repeatedly chant ""Allahu Akbar" (God is Great) preceded by the beating of giant drums.
Thursday night`s event began with a prayer by Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali, followed by the beating of a drum , one meter in diameter,for 15 seconds, by President Yudhoyono.
After the drum beating, the President delivered his Idul Fitri greetings to the entire nation. "On behalf of the state, the government and myself, in the triumphant spirit of Ramadhan, and the spirit of unity and brotherhood, I hereby wish you all a happy Idul Fitri 1431 Hijriah," the president said.
Later on Friday morning, the President was hold an open house at the palace for state officials, and in the afternoon, from 3 to 5.30 pm, he and his family would hold another open house for the public.
Unlike in previous years, the president would this year not hold an open house on the second day of Idul Fitri, Saturday, at his private Cikean Indah residence in Bogor. Instead , he would spend time his mother Siti Habibah and the rest of his family.(*)
