Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Outgoing Attorney General Hendarman Supandji hoped that a career official from his office would be the one to be chosen later to replace him.
"I prefer a career official because he has from the beginning undergone and passed an education process as a prosecutor," he said after conveying Idul Fitri greeting to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the palace here on Friday.
He said a career official understands better the institution. He declined to mention names that meet requirements to become the new attorney general saying only that those eligible for the position are echelon one officials.
Hendarman who is to enter retirement soon said the new attorney general must have strong committment to bureaucratic reform and courage to improve the institution and act against those committing crimes.
Regarding his officials he admitted that they have shortcomings and might have also made mistakes. "So do not hesitate to find them," he said.
The Attorney General`s Office spokesman, Babul Khoir Harahap shared his view saying he agreed if the next attorney general would come from the institution.
He said the one from the institution certainly has professionalism and understands bureaucratic reform in the office.
He said among those fit to be the next attorney general are Darmono (currently vice attorney general), Marwan Effency (deputy attorney general for supervision) and M Amari (deputy attorney general for special crimes).
He said however that the office would fully refer the choice to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives Pramono Anung meanwhile said recently that there was no need to debate over whether the next attorney general should come from within or outside the office.
"It is no longer contextual to debate over that issue. What is important is he can become a `commander` for preventing and eradicating corruption in the country," he said.
He said Indonesia has had a history of having good attorney generals from within or outside the office.
