Sikakap, West Sumatra (ANTARA News) - After being swept away by tsunami, a 1.5-year-old bay was found alive by a ten-year-old child at Munte Baru-baru, Pagai Selatan Sub District, Mentawai Island District, West Sumatra Province.

The baby was found on Wednesday at around 10 am local time, and an hour later was submitted to Sikakap community health post, Eki, a staff of the health post, said.

"The baby`s head is wounded and it has a fever," Eki said.

The baby was crying alone when it was found by the ten-year-old child at Munte. So far, the baby`s parents are not yet known.

The number of fatalities from tsunami and magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Mentawai Island District, West Sumatra Province, rose to 283 on Thursday morning, while 250 others are still missing.

"We have obtained the figure based on the official data from the Mentawai Disaster Mitigation Office. if there is a bigger number, we don`t know the sources," Joskamtir, head of the Mentawai Disaster Mitigation Office, said here Thursday.

Some 200 others were injured in the two disasters in West Sumatra Province. Data form the disaster command post showed that 426 houses were heavily damaged or carried away by tsunami while those lightly damaged totalled 200 units.(*)
