Mt Bromo erupts effusively

Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA News) - Mount Bromo in East Java erupted on Friday but its eruptions were effusive.

"The eruptions occurred at 5.22pm," the chief volcano monitoring staff of the Volcanology and Geological Dasaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG), Agus Budianto, confirmed to ANTARA by phone Friday evening.

He said effusive eruptions would only cause lava to flow around the crater and in the case of Bromo it would probably only go as far as the sand sea below.

"According to reports that we received the mountain spewed volcanic materials 600 to 700 meter high and therefore it only affected the area around the crater and not outside that," he said.

He said his office would keep monitoring the trends of its volcanic earthquakes, tremors and their consequences which until now still tended to be fluctuative.

Trisno Sutejo, a villager of Tosari, Pasuruan, confirmed the eruptions "yes, I saw by my own eyes a black smoke billowing upward but I did not hear sound of explosions or saw ash rain."

His house is located just around three kilometers from the mountain.

Volcanic materials coming out of Mount Bromo are usually black dust not molten lava like that in Mount Merapi in Central Java, according to some sources.

East Java vice governor Saifullah Yusuf had said the provincial government had already prepared evacuation centers for precautionary purposes.
