Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection Linda Gumelar said, here Monday, the case of Sumiyati, an Indonesian migrant worker who was tortured by her Saudi Arabian employer, will take a long time in its handling process.

"The handling process of Sumiyati will take a long time because of her physical condition after she was tortured by her employer, however I really appreciate her zest for life," she said here Monday.

Linda, who returned to Jakarta on Sunday (28/11) after visiting Sumiyati at King Fahd Hospital, said Sumiyati is in a terrible physical condition and needed serious medical treatment.

"Her condition was so horrible and everyone who saw must also have a sense of deep sadness," the Minister said after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) on information and data provision on gender and children.

The wife of former coordinating minister of political, law and security affairs Agum Gumelar added Sumiyati needed serious medical attention and treatment.

"The first medical action Sumiyati has was an operation on her head and she will soon also have a lung surgery to remove blood clots from her lungs," she added.

In relation to the information that Sumiyati was allowed to go home on Sunday (28/11) evening, the famous Indonesian badminton athlete`s mother-in-law confirmed that it was incorrect.

"I have verified the information with our deputy in Saudi Arabia, and it was not true. Sumiyati needs a very long time for recovery. And after her physical condition is much better, she will also need psychological treatment," she confirmed.

Moreover, Linda said the father of Sumiyati would be picked up Tuesday (30/11) from West Nusa Tenggara to Jakarta, and then to be sent to see her.

There are two things which Sumiyati wants to achieve after the savage torture she got; she wants to meet her father and continue her under-graduate degree in order to reach her dream to be a Bahasa teacher.

Sumiyati strained herself to bear the pain while she was being tortured by her employer because she was thinking about how to keep working and earn money for her study.(*)
