The floods hit the villages of Pakis Putih, Kranji, Sastrodirejan, and Siberuk following torrential rainfalls that triggered the overflowing of Singkarang river after its dike in
Kedungwuni subdistrict`s area got damaged since Sunday morning.
Information that ANTARA collected from local authorities and villagers revealed that the flood waters did not only damage tens of houses but also inundated hectares of paddy fields.
The flooding had even forced 20 families whose houses were submerged and damaged to take refuge to higher places, such as small mosques and school buildings.
According to Sugeng, 47, he had saved his family members to a higher place to get rid of the floods that had also paralyzed a bridge linking Karangdadap village in Pekalongan district to neighboring areas in Batang district.
On December 31, 2010, flash floods also hit the western part of Singaraja town in Buleleng district, Bali province.
In the natural disaster, a local resident was killed and the other one went missing. The floods also destroyed a bridge.
Since last year, heavy floods have posed a serious threat in many parts of Indonesia.
In December 2010 alone, floods inundated some villages in Cilacap (Central Java) as well as Lombok Timur and Dompu (West Nusa Tenggara).
Over the past year, Indonesia has been undergoing an extreme weather phenomenon, which partly characterizes with heavy rains and whirlwinds.
As the consequences of the torrential rains and whirlwinds, various vulnerable parts of the country have experienced flash floods and landslides.
Wasior town in Teluk Wondama, West Papua Province, for instance, was struck by flash floods on October 3 and 4, 2010.
The Wasior flooding was the worst which had reportedly killed at least 150 people.
Wasior town was covered with mud, logs and rocks following the floods.(*)
