Mataram, NTB (ANTARA News) - The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provincial government has started implementing an "Intelligent Transportation System" (ITS) in a bid to reduce traffic accidents.

"We have started to implement the ITS technology at the ports and other strategic locations in the province to reduce traffic accident," local Information, Communication and Transportation Department spokesman Ridwan Syah said at a coordination meeting, chaired by NTB Vice Governor H Badrul Munir said here on Thursday.

Badrul Munir chaired the coordination meeting to discuss extreme weather of windstorm which brought down trees and and dislodged roof tiles at various locations in the past week.

Ridwan admitted that the Intelligent Transportation System could help transport users in various purposes of acquiring information, facilitating transaction, improving transportation facility and capacity, reducing traffic jam, improving travel security, and reducing environmental pollution.

In principle, the application of ITC is part of advanced electronic, computer, and telecommunication technology to smoothen transportation facility.

ITS technology also covers the scope of "Advanced Traveler Information System" for the travelers to have an optimal route.

Ridwan said weather detecting instrument could also be attached to the ITS in order to spread information about bad weather condition.(*)
