Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - A total of 334 state officers in North Sumatra province were involved in drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the past seven years, the local narcotic board said.

"The figure is based on data from the police from 2004 to late September 2010," Secretary of the North Sumatra Provincial Narcotic Board (BNP) Sugiarto said here on Thursday.

He said 135 of the 334 state officers were civil servants, while the rest was police and military personnel.

Overall, 23,680 people were named suspects in drug abuse and illicit trafficking in North Sumatra in the past seven years, he said.

The data show there were a total of 16,965 reported cases of drug abuse and illicit trafficking over the period. (*)
