Kandahar, Afghanistan (ANTARA News/AFP) - Seven people captured and then released by the Taliban were killed when their vehicle was hit by a landmine planted by the insurgents in Afghanistan, a local official said Friday.

The incident took place Thursday in Zabul, an unstable province in southern Afghanistan, provincial spokesman Mohammad Jan Rasoolyar told AFP.

He said the Taliban stopped seven cars, sent the passengers away, and "took the cars and the seven drivers to their base. Later they planted a land mine and then put all the drivers in one car ordering them to go.

"As the the car carrying the drivers reached the area where the mine had been planted, the Taliban remotely detonated the mine, killing all seven people."

The Taliban was not immediately contactable for comment. (*)
