Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will organize an ASEAN workshop on the best practice of empowering women in micro and small businesses in Lombok, East Nusa Tenggara, on June 14-16, a minister said.

"The event is a follow up program of Indonesia as the current chair of ASEAN," Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection Linda Amalia Sari Gumelar said here on Wednesday.

She said the workshop was also part of efforts to increase people-to-people contact among ASEAN member states. In addition, it was also aimed at documenting the best practice of empowering ASEAN women in the micro and small business sector, particularly with regard to marketing and business innovations.

The workshop would recommend the formation of a women organization forum and an ASEAN regional micro credit institute as a means to prepare and formulate action plans to empower women, she said.

The workshop would feature noted businesswomen from the Philippines, China, Vietnam and Indonesia, she said.

She said the event would bring together about 100 representatives from women organizations at regional and central levels.

The recommendation on the revision of policies and steps related to the empowerment of women in micro and small businesses at ASEAN level would be conveyed to the ASEAN chair as an input for an ASEAN meeting scheduled for October 2011, she said.(*)
