Ternate, North Maluku (ANTARA News) - North Maluku provincial government is making every effort to turn Pitu airport in Morotai district into an international aerodrome.

Local transportation, communication and information department spokesman Umar Hasan said here on Thursday that the effort was intended to support the district development into a tourist destination and investment in east Indonesia.

Umar said the local government has proposed the effort to change the status of Pitu airport into an international aerodrome to Transportation Ministry.

According to him the Transportation Ministry has responded the proposal and in the near future it would send a team to North Maluku to obtain first hand information about the feasibility of Pitu airport.

Umar said the North Maluku provincial government wanted to make Pitu an international airport to support the program of making Morotai one of tourist destination in Indonesia, especially in the eastern part of the country.

Morotai district has a big potential of marine, natural, cultural, and historical tourism.

"The local government Morotai district is also programmed into the center of the fishing industry by the local government, and therefore it should be supported by adequate infrastructure and international standard airport," Umar said.

With an international standard airport in Morotai, Umar said both domestic and foreign investors would be attracted to invest in fishery industry and other fields in the district.
