Damage to the earth is mostly caused by a handful of people who are greedy for power and money,"
Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Non-governmental organization and environment activists grouped in marginal community staged a rally here on Friday to mark the Earth Day.

"The rally is a manifestation of our concern about the increasingly critical condition of the earth. Therefore, we must always be aware of the need to save the earth," environment activist Zulkarnaen said.

The Earth Day which falls on April 22 must become a momentum for mankind to introspect as well as to anticipate and curb damage to the earth, he said.

The widespread natural disasters, global warming and climate change were concrete examples of damage to the earth, he said.

"Damage to the earth is mostly caused by a handful of people who are greedy for power and money," he said.

The damage to the earth had victimized mostly women and children, he said.

The condition persisted because of natural resource exploitation which ignored environmental conservation, he said.

During the rally, the demonstrators also held an oration calling for efforts to save the earth.

Earlier, the student executive board of the faculty of cultural sciences of Hasanuddin University in Makassar also staged a similar rally the day before. (*)
