Forestry Minister inaugurates Ciwalen Canopy Trail

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan inaugurated the Ciwalen Canopy Trail that is 120 m long and 60 m wide at an elevation of 30-40 m above the ground at the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, West Java, recently.

In one trip, the canopy trail can accommodate 5 to 10 people, the forestry ministry said in a press statement here Thursday.

The facility will allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful view of tropical forests at Mount Gede Pangrango National Park from en elevation of f 30-40 meters.

The inauguration of the Ciwalen Canopy Trail coincided with the observance of the International Day of Biological Diversity on May 22.

The forestry minister on the occasion also urged the community to join a Tree Adoption program aimed at rehabilitating and restoring critical land at the conservation area of Mount Gede Pangrango and Mount Halimun Salak National Parks in particular.

The program`s participants can donate some money to GEDEPAHALA consortium for tree planting to be conducted by local people/

The GEDEPAHALA consortium is a collaboration of 14 institutions consisting of national parks, international institutions, local NGOs, local community, local administrations the private sector.

The program is aimed at encouraging the public to help preserve the environment and support the forest resource conservation.

The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.

Environmental Affairs Minister Gusti Muhammad Hatta and Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan led a function to observe the Biodiversity Day 2011 at Cibodas Biotanical Garden and the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park in West Java, Monday.

The event was attended by among others West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan and Chairman of the Indonesian Science Institute (LIPI) Lukman Hakim.

The environmental affairs minister on the occasion signed inscriptions of the establishment of Biodiversity Parks in West Java, North Sulawesi and East Java Provinces.
