Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Around 1,000 people died in traffic accidents in the capital city of Jakarta and environs in 2010, according to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police.

"Every day we received three to four reports of deaths in traffic accidents," the traffic director of the police command, Senior Commissioner Royke Lumowa, said here on Tuesday.

He said the traffic death rate in the city was quite high and therefore serious efforts need to be made to reduce it.

He said most of the accidents that led to deaths were caused by motorists who are not disciplined and inadequate conditions of the roads.

He said most of the deaths were from the age group of 16 to 25 years old and motorcyclists.

Royke said he would seek solutions of the problem with the stakeholders including setting up traffic sign correctly and improving road conditions.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police recorded 299 deaths in traffic accidents from January to May this year.

According to data of the police command`s traffic directorate 1,005 died i7,487 accidents in 2010. In 2009 the number of traffic deaths was 1,017, in 2008 999, in 2007 1,169, in 2006 1,128 and in 2005 1,118.
