The lawmaker made the call here on Saturday when commenting on several corruption suspects who had run away to Singapore in recent years in order to escape the law. Repatriation of the suspects was difficult because Singapore had so far not ratified an extradition agreement with Indonesia.
"I hope the Singapore government will soon ratify it," he said.
According to him, Singapore had actually signed the extradition agreement with Indonesia but not yet ratified it.
Indonesia needs an extradition agreement for among others catching corruptors and money launderers who have so far been hiding in Singapore.
Negotiations on it were halted several years ago after no agreement on DCA was reached due to sovereignty issue. The DCA would make it possible for the Indonesian air territory to be used by Singapore for military training.
Several quarters meanwhile have expressed concern that the agreement, if finally reached, could no longer be used to catch corrupters in the past.
Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa after meeting his Singaporean counterpart K Shanmugam recently stated no progress had been made with regard to the conclusion of an extradition treaty with the neighboring country.
"No progress (has been made yet). We are still in the same position as some time ago," he said.
Marty said at the meeting with Shanmugam in Jakarta last June 24 various issues had been discussed including cooperation in the field of law, especially an extradition treaty.
Regarding the agreement which has been put in one package with the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) Marty said Indonesia has started conducting informal communication with the parliament to review and explore steps which can be taken in the future.(*)
